My research focuses on understanding how interactions among the climate, the biosphere, the ocean and human activities alter the cycles of carbon and methane, two major greenhouse gases (GHG), and to provide useful projections of future changes in global carbon and methane cycles and resultant future climate change. To conduct this research, I have developed a state-of-the-art earth system model, known as the Integrated Science Assessment Model (ISAM). Over the coming years I will focus on addressing key interactions between the climate terrestrial ecosystems.  A particularly challenging scientific problem in this regard involves the influence of nitrogen cycle on the response of terrestrial carbon storage to increasing CO2 concentration and mineral nitrogen deposition, and climate change. Another challenge, on which I will be focusing over the next coming years, is to improve our understanding of how ocean chemistry and circulation interact with the carbon cycle.

As for the graduate advising, I provide my graduate students consistent guidance, assistance and support in order to assist them in developing independent research skills, I expect my students to demonstrate continuous research and academic progress. For example, I encourage my students to present their research work at conferences and publish their work in journals. All my students have earned fellowships to interact with other scientists at world-class institutions.
