ABSTRACT
In Illinois each year brings one or more interesting climate events and this year was no exception. One such event was the April freeze that caused an estimated $150 million in agricultural damages. This was a one-two punch of an abnormally warm March that encouraged early plant development, followed by an early April freeze with temperatures in the upper teens and lower twenties for several nights in a row. The second significant event was a series of heavy rain events in northern Illinois in August. These heavy rain events caused considerable flooding and were accompanied by severe weather. The result was insured losses in excess of $225 million. The seminar will discuss the atmospheric features of these two events and the associated losses.
