The mountain-induced precipitation along the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to Patagonia, influences the transport of water vapor between the Atlantic and Pacific and in turn the salinities of these oceans. In this research, using conventional and isotope methods, we seek to understand the latitudinal variation in the effectiveness of orographic precipitation in removing water from the air; the so called Drying Ratio. We report on recent field work from Oregon, Northern California and Patagonia. The use of cloud resolving models and new projects in the Tropics are also discussed. |
